Every person should have the right to be free from oppression and suffering, to be educated, have access to clean water and food, to live in a place of safety and be able to earn money to provide for their loved ones.
Haven of Light’s work includes education and awareness about human rights and global justice, including a priority of the prevention of exploitation and abuse for all people, from all forms of modern slavery and human trafficking at a local and international level.
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, adopted in 1948, begins with a powerful principle:
“All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights.
They are endowed with reason and conscience and should thus act towards one another.”
This statement remains as relevant today as it was then. It reminds us that equality and dignity are not privileges; they are inherent rights for every person. Acting with reason and conscience means respecting and protecting these rights in our communities, workplaces, and global systems. In a world still facing discrimination, exploitation, and injustice, this declaration calls us to uphold human rights as the foundation for peace, freedom, and shared humanity.
The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a set of 17 global objectives adopted by the United Nations to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure peace and prosperity for all by 2030. They are crucial today because they provide a shared roadmap for tackling urgent challenges like inequality, lack of access to education, prevention from exploitation and abuse, environment concerns etc.
By working toward these goals, nations and communities can create a fairer, healthier, and more sustainable future for everyone. We believe that the SDGs are more than global targets in the work against modern slavery and human trafficking.
By helping people to understand these goals and to see how they connect to everyday life, from protecting human rights, to actively learn and engage and then to be able to do something about ending exploitation. By raising awareness and providing resources, we empower individuals and communities to actively play their part in creating a safer and fairer place to live.
